St. Paul's River (Pop. 468)

This friendly coastal fishing village is surrounded by dramatic hills. St. Paulís River was named after its world-class salmon-fishing river by the same name. The Innu used the St. Paulís River as an important travel route to the interior for thousands of years. The first settlers of St. Paulís River maintained a salmon fishery at the mouth of the river. St. Paulís River is also famous for the invention of the cod trap, an innovation that revolutionized the cod fishing industry in Eastern Canada. William Henry Whiteley invented the cod trap in 1871 while running a substantial cod and salmon fishing operation on Bonne Esperance Island, located 7 kilometres offshore. The Whiteley Museum interprets this important part of the regionís history. Today, many local residents still fish for a living.
