BONNE ESPÉRANCE MUNICIPALITY
MIDDLE BAY ST. PAUL'S RIVER OLD FORT BAY

Bonne Espérance

The municipality of Bonne Esperance is located in a majestic environment. Its rugged coastline, small islands, dramatic hills and pristine rivers offer stunning views and lookouts.

The rich marine resources of this region have attracted people from across the ocean for thousands of years. By the late 18th century, people of European descent began settling here permanently to fish for cod, seals, salmon and other marine species. Fishing has always been the economic mainstay of the region. However, since the cod moratorium in the early 1990s, and most recently the closure of the crab fishery, fishing is practiced on a smaller scale.

The people from Bonne Esperance still enjoy traditional activities such as traveling inland in winter to hunt and trap, spending time on the outer islands and practicing traditional crafts. As many of the settlers came from Newfoundland, English is the predominant language in the area.

The municipality of Bonne Esperance is comprised of three small communities: Old Fort Bay, St. Paul’s River and Middle Bay.
